Four months and surviving

It's my fourth month here in Sydney and it has been kaleidoscopic so far. The nature, people, the academics, the beautiful campus, late nights at the pub, the walks, and everything in between, makes up my wonderful experience here. Being a student at Sydney University is never easy and I am almost done with my first semester. Assessment deadlines just keep on coming and it was such a relief to be able to submit one of the major requirements today. There's plenty more to go, so it's a bit of a challenge now to manage my time since my energy is almost drained with the previous task, but I have faith that all will be well.

Bring sunshine

Flexibility is the key to avoid stress these days. The closer I am to my departure, the more stress I feel, especially when faced with issues at work. I try not to let these matters affect me anyway. I should just be thrilled right now while I wait for my ticket, and I hope the weather in Sydney won't dampen my excitement. It will be my first winter and I doubt I will be able to adjust right away, especially that it’s still dry hot season with El Nino here in the Philippines. But then again, as what I keep saying, wherever I go, I should bring my own sunshine.

Dialogue on air

The past two days have been interesting and exhausting at the same time. There were a lot of work related tasks to accomplish and one of them is to attend a group discussion, which was held at a radio station in the city. The dialogue on air is a weekly segment by one of the broadcasters. I believe it's my first time to be inside a studio of a radio station, and it is just weird how DJs are able to deliver a joyful and even a party mood, when it’s so lonely inside the studio. While waiting, I kind of imagine it would be fun to be in front of what looks like a baggs condenser microphone every time we broadcast our forecast, and have our own little studio perhaps. I wonder how my voice would sound like; this could be a possible project in the future.
At first I was really nervous, being the only first timer among the attendees of the gathering. But eventually, I felt relaxed in answering the questions as i slowly realized that I have all the data in my hands and I can just browse through them anytime I want and I would still sound confident. Because I panicked on my way to the station, I almost forgot there’s no camera in front of me and I was in a radio program.

Preparation

Anxiety fills my days recently despite the news that I am accepted at the University of Sydney. I want to be always positive but I just can't fully be sure that I'm leaving in June since we don't have the Visa and tickets yet.

So, we are supposed to leave on the 2nd week of June and I'm hoping by next week, everything will be finalized so I can be ready. My major preparation includes leaving my boarding house, making arrangements with my phone lines, making appointment with my dentist, shopping for some travel essentials, taking care of work documents and turning over some tasks to my colleagues.

I have barely a month to do all these and I just can't start any of it coz my mind is pre-occupied with the what-if-my-visa-won't-be-approved kind of thought. However, the good thing is that I don't need to worry about my arrival in Sydney; my family is there so no need to worry about accommodation, one major task off from my list.

April Sun and Fun

Can't wait for April, my sister, and her family will be home and I'm going to be with my adorable nieces. I'd love to bring Chy to the spa and maybe eat ice cream afterwards and just chill while I listen to her stories about school and her friends, and maybe answer some of her witty questions. It's always fun to talk to her. And of course, our little Ky is growing up so fast, I would really want to watch her run and play and giggle. It will be summertime, so we might spend more fun time at the beach, something they would miss for a couple of months as winter awaits them when they go back.
Then, I will be much honored to be part of an important event, when Imoy and Elvie will exchange their vows and gold wedding bands. I'll be there as substitute and I've been enjoying this role since last year, the Baquials are just like my brothers, and they're the coolest. But the sad part is that when they go back, my parents will go with them, and I'll be alone again, but hopefully not for long.

Waiting

After all the heaps of documents has been submitted, I believe the facility is now ready to send our application for our first choice university, and now I'm hoping to get positive feedback before the month ends. If I won’t get in, it would still be exciting since I also really like my second choice, especially the elective subjects offered.

Another stage

Another stage for my scholarship is done and I’m back to my place. We had a three-day course counselling with the facility, and we were able to meet representative from 22 universities. It was held at Marriot hotel but our accommodation was at Quest hotel. Both hotels are close to Ayala Center Cebu; my favorite mall; I kind of miss the place since I haven’t visited there for several months. I had time to leisurely roam around the mall yesterday and noticed so much has changed. I was surprised to see new shops like Aeropostale, Zara, and another Starbucks on the top floor, a resto called The Socials, another one named Planet of Grapes and both looked cool and classy. Then there’s ballet school with cute little girls dancing and a music school doing drum selection process; both establishments are starting to get busy as summer vacation is getting close.  Anyway, I had to shop for some footwear, for my niece and for my sister. Good thing, So Fab always has small sizes for their chic sandals.

Hozier

When I heard the song "Take Me to Church", it sounded weird for me at first, but I ended up loving most of Hozier's songs, especially "Jackie & Wilson”. I kind of like the indie & blues feel of his songs and the lyrics are quite interesting. Hozier is an Irish musician, which I thought was not very common from that country, but when I looked up, I learned that some famous groups like U2, The Corrs, and The Cranberries, Sinéad O'Connor and Enya are all Irish. Aside from that, recently, I noticed that, European artists are slowly taking over the mainstream music, just like Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Avicii, Adele and Birdy. I'd say, in general, their music has a unique tonality, which isn't hard for me to appreciate as my first love for music was greatly influenced by a European group, none other than the legendary, The Beatles.

My fave month

My favourite month is here, and the cold weather makes it even better. Moreover, there’s a slim chance of tropical cyclone in the country, so hopefully less stress for that department. However, there has been a lot of invitations for lectures that sometimes, they overlap. Like for next week, I had to cancel my schedule in a certain university since I was selected to attend a training at the Central Office. I’m glad I was chosen for this, which is scheduled on Feb 8-13. I’m somewhat excited about it since it will be a train-the-trainers kind of workshop in cooperation with UK Met Office. Being in Manila isn’t exactly desirable for me, but at least, our accommodation and the activities are just in one place so I wouldn’t be bothered daily by the traffic problems.

It will just be a short month, but a lot of happenings.

Changes

Every day in the office, a lot of things bother me; from a broken chair, to a messy dining area, an unused weather model, high volume during afternoon TV drama, damaged photocopier, poor billing system, and the list goes on and on. During my first year, I was able to adjust to these things without complaints. But now, not only these things are embarrassing to outsiders, but also making me uncomfortable at work. I have a lot of sensible and practical suggestions in my mind, and I hope I would be able to present them and not be judged as superior or assuming. I simply want a well-organized office with clean and presentable facilities. Well, I hope someday I may have the chance to materialize these changes with the right attitude, and a right approach, to the right person.

2014 Animated films

I recently watched Big Hero 6 and I immediately like Baymax, a robot invented to be a personal healthcare companion. The film is indeed funny and the robot's ballooney appearance made it more adorable. I think the idea of the robot’s appearance and abilities is cool, and it surely added humour to the story. Meanwhile, How To Train Your Dragon2 is also hilarious. The story had a wonderful twist, plus, the graphics is wonderful, and I believe it would look awesome if you watch it with 3D.
Both films are definitely entertaining, funny with a bit of drama. Both are nominated for the Academy Award, and they both deserve it, but I believe How To Train Your Dragon2 has a better shot for the Best Animated Film.

AMANG 2015

I just a very productive and super hectic workweek. Since there's a lot of important events this week, the demand for weather information is really high. The inquiries from local government, the media, and the public are nonstop. Everyone's getting anxious since a significant weather disturbance is coming, which could happen during the major activities like the Pope's visit in Tacloban and as well as the Sinulog fluvial and grand parade. With our initial forecasts, we will feel the worst of this storm on Saturday, though a weakening trend is expected as it interacts with cold air, as it gets closer to the landmass. This will be the first tropical cyclone for 2015, which has an international name MEKKHALA, and local name AMANG. This one seems to be so eager to meet the Pope.

So now, it's finally my off day, I hope I can fully relax before my trip to Manila next week, and I really hope for the success of the activities this weekend as well as the safety of everyone attending.

Cameron's view

I love Cameron Diaz' view of how we should live our lives, and some of the things she said in interviews are just realistic and also reflects her strength as a woman, something that I really want to abundantly have as I wander through life.

"I think the big misconception in our society is that we're supposed to meet the one when we're 18, and we're supposed to get married to them and love them for the rest of our lives. Bullsh*t." — Stylist magazine, 2010

Happy 2015!

The last two months of 2014 was the busiest for me. A lot of things happened which included my scholarship preparation, training, out-of-town speaking engagements, hosting a Christmas party, and the passage of three tropical cyclones. Most of these involved travelling and there were times when it was very exhausting as I only get to rest for a day or two before the next travel. I could not imagine how I got all the energy to take care of all those things. So now I'm hoping that it would be less busy next month because I might not be effective anymore with my work. And for the past days, it seems like I’m only sleeping but not actually resting.

Well, I may be so stressed out but I am so grateful and I feel so blessed to be given all these opportunities and I know that there's more to come. So 2015 will be an exciting one. Europe may not be part of this year, but I know, there's always a best time for it in the future.
